The Michigan Athletic Trainers Society is pleased to announce the success of our 5th Annual Athletic Training Student Seminar and Bowl. This year, we had a record high 209 participants representing 12 Michigan CAATE Accredited institutions. On Sunday, October 26, 2008, students traveled to the Clara Bell Smith Academic Center on the campus of Michigan State University. This year’s keynote address, Treatment Techniques for Myofascial Pain, was given by William Prentice PhD, PT, ATC. Other presentations included Motor Cross Sports and Injury by Tim Drudge MS, ATC, CSCS, Bracing Techniques by Rod Walters DA, ATC, MRSA and Other Skin Issues in Athletics by Alysia Green MD, Mouthguards and Oral Injuries by Dan Derksen DDS, and The Future of Facemask Removal by Tom Cappaert PhD, ATC. Students were also updated on the NATA Young Professional and Student Committees by Karen Petersen, CAE and Bria Noel, District IV representative, as well as updates from the GLATA and MATS student committee by Kent Games, Michigan GLATA Student Senator and Lindsey Pyc of the MATS ATS Committee. Vendors were also available for students to interact with throughout the day.

Twenty-six teams from around the state competed to earn the right to represent Michigan at the 2009 GLATA Bowl in Ft. Wayne. Michigan State University was victorious, with the University of Michigan as the runner up and Central Michigan University in third.

For the second year in a row, the Committee also hosted a Leadership Summit where two representatives from each institution had the opportunity to share ideas and participate in a round table from Dr. Prentice, Karen Petersen, and Dr. Green. This year’s meeting hosted 28 students and took place the evening before the Seminar on Saturday, October 25, 2008 at the Spartan Hall of Fame CafĂ©.
